In Pre-K and Kindergarten music the focus is on exposure and experience. Students will move, speak, sing, and play with a wide variety of musical selections. They will be exposed to new music as they start to imitate and identify sounds they are able to make on their own. More specifically, in alignment with MCPS and National Core Arts standards, here is what we have been working on:

Headstart & Pre-K

In Pre-K music we have been working on accessing our singing voices through a number of songs and finger plays and playing classroom instruments. Recently, we've been exploring the many ways animals sound and move! A new favorite song is "Little Green Frog" in white students move to musical cues and experience playing our large and small frog guiros! Our 3 year olds made shakers out of recyclables in art and we've been using them in music!

Kindergarten

Our Kindergartners are starting to track a steady beat and read long/short-short rhythm patterns. We have been identifying long and short by sight and sound through a variety of songs and have even created our own patterns using popsicle sticks and counters. Right now we are using the song "Grizzly Bear" to explore musical opposites. See below as we create long/short-short patterns using icons.  Soon we will begin a responding process in which students will explore the Carnival of the Animals, a collection of songs written by Camille Saint Saens.
